Area-I led the flight testing of the PTERA Spanwise Adaptive Wing (SAW) in conjunction with NASA and Boeing personnel during the week of December 11th 2018. This PTERA configuration integrates a novel actuator using a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) material developed by NASA Glenn and converted into an actuator by Boeing Research and Technology. The actuator is used to deflect the outer portion of the swept wings of the SAW configuration in flight by heating and cooling the alloy. The tests served to validate simulation models, research the aerodynamic benefits for both subsonic and supersonic aircraft, mature the controls of the SMA, and test the SMA actuator for transition to future commercial applications.
